Therapy Tails Level 2 | Advanced Therapy Dog Training

Program Overview:

Therapy Tails Level 2 – Working Skills is an advanced dog training program in Calgary, designed for dogs and handlers who have completed Therapy Tails Level 1 – Foundations and are ready to continue their journey toward becoming a Therapy Dog, Service Dog, or Animal-Assisted Therapy team.

This 8-week program (8 × 1-hour classes) will help you advance teamwork, obedience, and manners while introducing critical working and therapeutic skills. For those pursuing Service Dog certification, we begin training specific working tasks that assist the handler with daily activities. For those working towards Therapy Dog or Animal-Assisted Therapy certification, you will develop the therapeutic skills needed to interact effectively with clients in hospitals, schools, and seniors' residences.

By the end of this class, you and your dog will have developed the key skills to continue building a strong foundation for working as a team in the real-world—whether that’s providing direct support to a handler, or offering comfort and assistance to others in therapeutic settings.

Dog Skills:

• Settling in small spaces and various environments

• "Visit" command for engaging with people

• Calm for petting and handling

• Deep pressure therapy (Press)

• Perch and body awareness

• Door and stairs protocol

• Spatial positioning and getting back command

• Advancing leave-it and impulse control

• Strengthening stay and startle recovery

• Zero-tension leash walking

• Alone training and working with strangers

• Fixing the leash and more!

Human Skills:

• Understanding the categories and distinctions of working dogs

• Certification options and requirements

• Micro-signaling and subtle communication

• Co-regulating your dog for better interactions

• Leading with love and confidence

Vaccinations:

Dogs must be up-to-date on Rabies, DHPP, and Bordetella (or have current titres) to attend.
