I Think My Dog Speaks Spanish: Decoding the Language Barrier Between Humans and Dogs

Decoding the language barrier between humans and dogs

Sharing our lives with a dog often  leads us into uncharted territory. We can quickly discover that the conversations we think we are engaging in with  our canine companions may not always align with the conversations our dogs are having with us. This discrepancy in communication or ‘language barrier’ can lead to confusion and frustration, and can result in behaviours that may otherwise seem inexplicable – such as aggression, fear, reactivity, and disobedience.

Recently, I had the privilege of chatting about this enlightening topic with my colleague, Sheila Gunston. Our discussion shed light on the importance of understanding the true language being spoken between humans and dogs. If you ever find yourself grappling with the language barrier between you and your dog, whether in Calgary or beyond, know that support is available.

If you’re based in Calgary, Alberta, I encourage you to explore our Feisty Fido program. This program is designed to guide you and your reactive or aggressive dog along the path from chaos to calm. Alternatively, if you reside outside of Calgary, consider enrolling in one of our online courses, such as the Rover Re-Imagined Reactive Dog Program.

Questions or inquiries? Don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help bridge the communication gap between you and your dog and steer you in the right direction.
