Behavior Modification - For serious behavioral challenges
Behavior Modification is a science-based, empirically demonstrated training process that uses sound understanding of behavioral psychology, neuropsychology, physiology, and emotions not only to address overt behavior challenges, but also to uncover and resolve the underlying emotional causes. Our behavior modification program is specifically designed to help dogs recondition their thinking patterns so that they learn to respond to stimuli that triggers "bad" behaviors in more positive ways.
For instance, one of the issues we are often asked to address is dog to dog aggression. Our first step is to sleuth out what is causing the aggressive behavior, and how the dog's past experience has reinforced his response to other dogs. And, because dogs repeat behaviors that are rewarded, we also consider what functional reward he could be getting from lunging, barking and growling at other dogs. In many cases, aggression is motivated by fear; the dog is choosing threat behaviors to increase distance between himself and other dogs. After several such instances, the aggressive behavior becomes associated in his thought patterns with making “scary dogs” disappear. Once we've put all these pieces together, we can address both the root cause, fear, and the behavior/reward association that is causing the troublesome behavior. As we help the dog recondition his thinking to new patterns of association and give him new, healthier ways to express his fear, the aggression ceases naturally.
